The Southern 32's second south coast garden round was held on 12 July, thanks to Derek for making us all so welcome.

The early pace is qualifying was set by James Cleave and Simon Francis with identical scores side by side in heat 2, both with Falcon power.  Ian Barker set the only 34 of the day in heat 3, demonstrating that Super Wasp power has some advantages round Bournemouth.  Phil Hemsley found his super was much quicker than his Falcon, so only used the Falcon on the outside lanes. The top places remained pretty static till the last 3 heats when James temporarily moved into a clear second.  In the next heat Mark Hammond surprised himself (and a few others) by putting over a lap on his personal best to take second overall just ahead of Simon, the pair of them displacing James to 4th qualifier.

Clubman's Falcon

The falcon B final was split into two races, Dan Garges and Phil Hemsley frequently swapping the lead, Dan eventually taking the win by 20 feet. Meanwhile Roland Hobden took third by less than a lap from Paul Hayward.  The Falcon final was all home drivers,  Simon was looked quickest throughout, and won by over a lap from a close race between Mark and Murray Tucker.

Falcon Masters and Super Production

Ian Fisher narrowly missed qualifying for the B final, and won the C final by a very comfortable margin from Phil Hemsley, perhaps surprisingly this was the only final with more than one super production car.  Dan beat Roland for third by a third of a lap.
The B final was rather too full of cars running into one another for very quick scores.  Murray won by half a lap from Stan Alton, with Scott Francis in third.
In the A final Ian Barker, Simon Francis and James Cleave looked to have fairly similar speed, once the race had settled Ian consistently pulled out a small margin to win while Simon won the battle of the Falcons to take second ahead of  James.  Mark wasn't able to match his qualifying speed on white, and took care not to impeded the close battles ahead of him

Le mans 32

The team race started out with Luton pulling almost a lap a minute on second place I Squared, followed by the closely matched Funky Icemen, Team Extreme, Brighton Beach Bums.  A few laps back  Paul & Derek and the Scousers were closely matched in the first segment, and set near identical times in the second segment,   I Squared were quicker than Luton in both the middle segments, giving the Ians a 6 lap lead going into the final segment.   Team Extreme were quick in segment 2 moving up to third, but their gears became extremely noisy early in segment 3 and the inevitable pit work dropped them to the back of the field. Meanwhile the Funkys were quicker than Brighton in  the  middle segments, although the Funkys slowed near the end of the final segment with worn out tyres, they had plenty of laps in and to take third ahead of Brighton.   After a closely matched first half. Scousers pulled away from  Paul & Derek's Falcon production car in the second half.  What about the leaders?  James set the fastest time of the day in the final segment, while the Ians had a tyre change and didn't quite have the pace in blue, so Luton won by 8 laps.
