Timaru Southern 32

Sunday 20 September 2009

TIMARU club website

Fifteen production and team race enthusiasts assembled at the new Timaru premises and track in Broadstairs, including return visitors Ian Barker and Mike Read who competed at the Timaru BOC round in July.

New faces included Peter Shaw, a returning slot racer form several decades ago who is effectively the new Timaru landlord as boss of The Crampton Tower Museum where Timaru is now based.

The pace was set by newly crowned National Super Production Challenge Champion, James Cleave, who was the the only driver to beat the 40 lap barrier in the 3 minute qualifying heats and did so three times. Dave Harvey had a torrid time with borrowed cars and end up 4th in the B Final. James won the A Final from Ian Barker, Mike Read and Graham Sampson. Graham's was the only Falcon to make the A or the B final and he easily won Falcon Masters. Stan Alton just won from Ian Fisher in the B Final. The other finals were all Falcon powered with Phil Hemsley winning the C and Andy Bishop finally getting it together with a fast time which won the D Final.

In Falcon Clubman, Graham Sampson again dominated, with Stan Kirk, Bob Mortimer and Les May having a tight race for the remaining places in the A Final. Andy Bishop dominated the B Final with another fast run (do it in the heats next time Andy).

In the last few years at the Timaru S32 round, Dave Harvey has joined Graham Sampson in the home White Cliffs team, with a Dave Harvey prepared Gp12 'missile', to provide White Cliffs with their annual win. This time, it didn't quite go according to plan. The 'missile' was as fast as ever but had trouble in each of the four segments with a combination of broken lead wire (twice), missing pin and a tyre change. Despite this, the duo were leading after two segments but a lengthy second broken wire stop in the third finally dropped them to fourth overall. This car was regularly lapping at below 4 seconds with both drivers whilst on the track, a time only otherwise achieved in his segments by James Cleave for Luton.

Luton SCC with James Cleave and Stan Alton therefore had an unchallenged run to the flag, followed by I Squared with the two Ians and the Couldson team of Mike Reid and Les May having fun with a fast car. The three man third Timaru team running as Simpsons (therefore not qualifying for points but everybody got a run!) had a steady run with a Falcon powered car (the normal White Cliffs Team Race car) to fifth, Brighton Beach Bums had a bumpy ride to sixth followed at a distance by NFC who lived up to their name with a series of problems which culminated in a chassis repair involving an old allen key wrench employed as pan stop!

Many thanks to all who helped including Dave Harvey for loan of a race control computer, Graham Sampson for score keeping, Ian Fisher for Race Control support and Stan Kirk for Race Control for most of the event. Also many thanks to all who turned up and contributed to an enjoyable day's racing. Please come again!
