Cotswold Challange - December

Sunday 19th December saw seven hardy souls (or should that be silly so & so's) assemble at Dowty's Slot Club for the final two rounds of the 2010 Cotswold Challenge. With appalling weather conditions & illness making a contribution, Swindon were represented solely by Mike Perkins, whilst new champion Rob Harris, reigning champion Dave Coward, Andy "Mr Consistent" (5 rounds, 5 3rd places) Dunan, Funky & late comers Graham Fryer & Phil Mitchell made up the balance.

With more bad weather scheduled it was decided by an "on the spot" unanimous vote that we would run only one sequence of races but award double points to ensure an early finish & a good chance of everyone getting home before the freeze deepened.

Qualifying saw DC quickest from Andy, Rob, Funky, Phil, Mike P & Graham.

Three man step up finals saw the top two going forward meaning no-one wanted to finish last in their final, but Graham was the first to get eliminated, with Phil Mitchell having an off in the D Final & not being able to make up the difference in the remaining time. Mike P was the unlucky C Finalist with Funky going out in the B Final. That left DC, Rob Harris & Andy Dunan contesting the A Final where Andy finally lost his consistent sequence of finishing 3rd by winning from DC & Rob Harris.

To celebrate a champion other than Dave Coward, Rob got a nice trophy & a bodyshell, whilst everyone else picked from a selection of goodies including bodyshells, motors, chassis kits & tyres.

The calendar for 2011 is already being worked on & if anyone has any suggestions for changes or improvements to the championship please drop me a line.

All the best for Christmas & the New Year & a good 2011 season,

Funky

Charity Rally Event at Dartmouth

The third annual Indoor Rally Championship was held in the Dartmouth Guild Hall on Saturday 27th November. A very cold day. Plenty of tea and coffee flowing thanks to the generosity of the Royal Navy College and hot pasties donated from Presto Pasties.

The four well laid out Tracks sponsored by Best Ltd, Chris Moseley Builders Ltd, Lemar Engines and Woodlands Leisure Park proved to be more of a challenge than the previous years, especially on track Three (Woodlands Run) at Paddy's Point after DTs Straight many found themselves going off into the distance and on to the floor.

The Juniors were away early with parents as their coaches. A well fought battle between the top three led to the winner Tommy Stewart with a time of 1: min 08.17 secs that would have seen him ninth in the open event. The Lady's trophy (The Bawden Cup) initially was held by Cathy Rowe, later on Jen Pichowski held top spot for most of the day until a late challenge from Evie Holmes who won with a time of  1: min 14.62 secs.

The Open event  had a handful of people on the top of the leader board with Tim Slade starting the ball rolling, then 2008 title holder Jamie Hudson-Bond arrived and soon started putting down faster laps although he took a while to get to grips with track One (Best Park) He had to go early in the evening and left with a time of 57.03secs which was nearly 10 seconds faster than any one else. At about 8.00pm Dale Lott the current champion turned up and started to eat away at Jamie's times until at about 9.30pm he did knock him off top spot and as Jamie was not there to defend his time and nobody else was in there class Dale took the title again with a 55.84sec time the only two people to get below a minute as the competitor who came third Alasdair Geary (Nottingham) had a time of 1: min 01.36 secs.

Cotswold Challenge - November

Tuesday 23rd November saw Round 10 of the 2010 Cotswold Challenge, with Rob Lees leading the Swindon contingent & being joined, in no particular order,  by Mike Perkins, Karl Bryant, Andy Whorton, Chris Steele & Graham Matteson. Dowty's were represented by championship winner Rob Harris, reigning champion Dave Coward, Andy Dunan & Funky.

Qualifying saw Dowty's take the top slots with DC from Rob Harris, Andy & Funky, then Rob Lees leading the Swindon crew, followed by Andy, Mike, Karl, Graham & newcomer Chris Steele.

Step up finals meant it was all to play for and Mike Perkins & KarlBryant duly progressed from the D Final at the expense of Graham & Chris who was taking part for the first time ever!! Andy W & Mike Perkins took the C Final at the expense of Karl & Rocky who ran out of tyres & gear teeth with a minute to go. The B Final went with qualifying, Andy winning from Funky with Andy W & Mike Perkins finishing 5th & 6th overall. The A Final was won by DC from a fast recovering Rob Harris who overhauled Andy in the dying seconds while Funky finished a lonely 4th.

The final 2 rounds are on Sunday December 19th, with more details to follow.

Cotswold Challenge - October

Round 9 of the 2010 Cotswold Challenge took place at Dowty's on Friday 22nd October with only Neal Callaghan present to represent Swindon. All the Dowty regulars were present with Rob Harris hoping to clinch the championship for the first time, Dave Coward hoping to stop him & Funky, Phil Mitchell, Noddy & Andy Dunan just looking for points. Dowty's numbers were completed by James Davey & two of the newer juniors, Evan & Gabe.

A relatively late start had Rob take top spot from DC in qualifying, followed by Andy, Neal, Phil & Funky, leaving Noddy, James Evan & Gabe to contest the first of the step up Finals. The formbook was upset when Noddy took the win & Gabe a stunning second. Evan took third from James Davey who paid the price for poor car preparation when his body finally disintegrated having already looked like the subject of an attack from a Rottweiller at the start of the evening. Noddy's dad, John Lockey stepped in to marshal after James left & saw Phil & Noddy advanced from the C Final after Funky had an early off & Gabe couldn't match the pace of his more experienced competition. However neither Phil or Noddy could hold Andy & Neal in the B Final who then had the dubious privilege of taking on DC & Rob Harris in the A Final. Rob duly clinched his first Cotswold Championship, beating Dave, Andy & Neal.

Next round is Dowty's on Tuesday 23rd November with hopefully a few more Swindon regulars.

Cotswold Challenge, Round 8
Cotswold Challenge returned after the summer break with a Swindon round at Dowty's.

Retiring BSCRA chairman Rocky led the Swindn contingent, backed up by Kevin Gee, Karl Bryant & relative newcomer Graham Matteson. Dave Coward, Rob Harris, Funky & Phil Mitchell were present for Dowty's with late arrival Graham Fryer swinging the odds in favour of the home side.

Qualifying saw DC ahead of Rob Harris, Funky & Phil with Rocky in 5th, the first Swindon racer. Graham Fryer took 6th from Kevin, Karl & Graham.

The usual step up format of finals saw Kevin & Karl progress from the D Final at the expense of Graham M. Graham Fryer had speed in the C Final but not the reliability, retiring early on with a stripped gear & Karl was third behind Rocky & Kevin. The B Final went to Funky ahead of Rocky & Kevin, with Phil retiring from 2nd with a broken lead wire. The A Final went to Rob Harris from DC with Funky 3rd & Rocky 4th using Funky's spare car, which he promptly purchased!!

This strengthens Rob's lead at the head of the table with 4 rounds to go.

See you all at Dowty's on Friday October 22nd, non-regulars & non-club members welcome.

Cotswold Challenge, Round 6

Sunday 20th June saw the Cotswold Challenge reach mid-point with it's annual summer tour, Dowty's for Round 6 in the morning, followed by lunch at Swindon then Round 7.

With the date clashing with Fathers Day & yet more TV coverage of overpaid under achievers kicking lumps out of each other in South Africa only 5 hardy souls appeared at Dowty's for Round 6. Rob Lees fresh from Morocco (well not very fresh at all!!) Dave Coward (fresh from a night out with the missus), championship leader Rob Harris, Funky & another returnee from the past, Phil Mitchell (no not THAT Phil Mitchell!!)

The depressingly low turnout saw 2 man heats followed by step up finals of again two racers. After a slow start Rob Harris broke out his quicker cars & duly top qualified from DC, Funky, Phil & an out of sorts Rob Lees, (or should that be half asleep).

Racing went with qualifying as Phil saw off Rocky but couldn't stay on long enough to beat Funky. DC took the B Final & then lost out to Rob Harris who extended his lead at the top of the championship.

With none of the Dowty mob being enticed to travel to Marlborough for the Swindon Round & Rob Lees sportingly not wanting to take an unchallenged win, Round 7 was cancelled.

We now have thenext two months to build, prepare & repair cars ready for the second half of the season due to resume on Tuesday September 21st.

Have a good summer everyone.

Congratulations to Modified for a stellar performance and a stunning car developed by Parsnip and co. I led into the first hour but hopes and dreams of a repeat victory soon diminished as we encountered numerous problems avoided a year ago. Modified moved into top gear and cruised away for an effortless win. It would be interesting to know if their pace was stronger than Shortys in previous years, certainly looked it, we need a shootout in 2011, are you up for it Shorty?

A big thank you to all the Pinewood crew for running a smooth and faultless event and an even bigger thank you to Rich for his generous gesture of sacrifycing his chances by splitting his strong 6 man team into two teams tp provide a full grid and supplying and running two cars too.

Round 5 of the 2010 Cotswold Challenge

Round 5 of the 2010 Cotswold Challenge took place at Dowty's on Friday 21st May with Swindon attendances at an all time low, Rob lees being their sole representative. Dowty's had all the usual suspects including reigning champion Dave Coward, back from his impression of David Attenborough in the Galapogos Islands (These builders are obviously being paid too much!!) Current championship leader Rob Harris, Funky, Noddy & Graham Fryer together with juniors James Davey, Tom Williams, Dean, Evan & Adam & newcomer Pete Bridgeland, another returnee from days gone by!

Qualifying seemed to take longer than expected, but contained few surprises with Rob taking top spot from DC, then Noddy & James, Funky & Rocky, Tom, Dean, Evan, Graham who suffered car problems, Adam & Pete who was on a near vertical learning curve in only his second evenings racing since returning.

The E Final saw Graham & Evan progress leaving Pete propping up the field & Adam 11th, needing to concentrate more. Graham edged Evan in the D Final but Tom & Dean progressed, only to lose out in the C Final to Funky & Rocky. Noddy & Funky made the A Final at the expense of Rocky & James & John Lockey kindly stepped in to marshal after James disappeared into the darkness!! Rob duly took the honours from DC, Noddy & Funky & we all packed up & disappeared to the bar or home!

Next round is the Summer Tour double header on Sunday 20th June, when hopefully

1 More Swindon drivers will be present
2 Less time will be spent chasing up marshals
3 Race control will NOT need a PA system to make themselves heard over the background noise.

Updated championship positions below.

Round 4 of the 2010 Cotswold Challenge

Round 4 of the 2010 Cotswold Challenge was run on Tuesday 20th April, with Swindon hosting the meeting at Dowty's track (It's a long story!!)

Due to Dave Coward auditioning asDavid Attenborough's replacement (He's off chasing giant turtles in the Galapagos Islands or summat, or he may be swimming home by now, what with no flights), Race Control was run by Mike Wall who declined to race in order that everyone else could!!

Dowty's fielded 6 racers, a number matched by Swindon with Rocky & Neil Callaghan joined by Mike Perkins, Kevin Gee, Karl Bryant & Andy Wharton to take on Rob Harris, Andy Dunan, James Davey, Funky & two of the Dowty juniors, Tom Williams & Dean Varty.

Qualifying was quiet & uneventful with Rob Harris top qualifying to uphold Dowty honours. the e Final saw Tom Williams start another of his climbs from an indifferent qualifying (not a problem with move up finals, but not good for S32!), winning from Andy Wharton, leaving Mike Perkins 11th & Karl 12th. Tom won again in the D Final, progressing with Rocky at the expense of Dean in 9th & Andy Wharton 10th. In the C Final Tom couldn't match the pace of James Davey, who had Mike Perkins to thank for fettling his car throughout the evening (Are you taking him to the Nats, James?) whilst Kevin took 7th & Rocky 8th with a surprisingly "off the pace" evening. Tom's run came to an end in the B Final when Andy Dunan won from James & an out of practice Funky. The A Final went with qualifying with Rob winning from Neil, Andy & James.

A good nights racing with brilliant race control & no drama's, no chasing people to marshal, no messing around (Well not much) - how different from club nights!!!!!!

Funky

2010 Cotswold Challenge Round 3 held at Dowty's on Friday 19th March.

The normally healthy entry was upped by two with the appearance of Chris Cowan from Newcastle & Dave Capplin from the Isle of Man & whilst I would like to say they came especially for the CC, they were both taking the opportunity for a bit of practice for the retro meeting being held over the weekend. Retro organiser & Dowty member, Mike Wall was providing them with accomodation for the weekend so it seemed like the way to go.

An entry of 17, after Mike Wall opted not to race in favour of taking on race control for the evening meant four Swindon racers, Neal Callaghan, Rob Lees, Mike Perkins & Karl Bryant took on the Dowty regulars of Dave Coward, Rob Harris, Andy Dunan & Funky with the Dowty junios & independent, Tony Condon rounding out the entry.

A couple of the younger members, Evan & Dec had to leave before finals started as it was getting late, and the first couple of step up finals saw Dave Capplin driving a borrowed car eliminated, along with Dowty juniors Dean & Adam. The E Final was the end for Chris Cowan & Karl while Tom Williams & Kieran were the best of the juniors finishing in 9th & 10th respectively. Rob Lees & Mike Perkins were unable to progress past the C Final whilst Tony Condon took 6th & Funky 5th leaving a relieved DC to go into the A Final with race winner Andy Dunan to take on Rob Harris & Swindons remaining racer Neal Callaghan. Rob took his first win of the year from DC, Andy & Neal, after which the track was cleaned in preparation for Sundays Retro bash & I updated the results!!

EAHORC 2010 Round 2 LHORC Edmonton - 21 Feb 2010

Despite the second round of the EAHORC championship being on the same weekend as many other slot car events, 19 people came along to Edmonton, making it the most successful meeting there to date. Formula one racing started a few minutes after 10am, with Martin Hill in probably his most imperious form ever, which is saying something. Once again the field behind him was ridiculously competitive, with Tony Stacey the driver to punch above his weight this time, taking the 3rd automatic place in the A final. Paul Homewood, the driver to watch last time out, proved that was no fluke by qualify a solid 5th, one place behind the ever improving Andy Player.

By contrast, the hero of the December round, Roy Masters, was struggling for consistency down in 16th place! Three newcomers from the prospective Kent-based HO club made their EAHORC debut. Tony Molloy would eventually finish 13th but put in good fastest laps in all his heats, so will be another one in the mix once he find some consistency. His son John and David Hannington also enjoyed their day, and plans are afoot for a return visit to pick up where they started. With the heats finished and lunch looming, the spreadsheet was quickly sorted and the finals got under way, starting with 'Edmo's' first ever F final, won by an unwell but still quick Craig Homewood. Dave Rouse, another driver struggling despite some quick laps times, won the E final, vanquishing Daniel Stacey and his father Steve as well as Roy.

For the D final Deane Walpole had managed to turn his form around a little and was somewhat closer to where a premier grade should be. With the
competitiveness of the class the way it is now, he found himself up against the impressive Tony Molloy, Julian Allard on pole and of course Dave,
capable of anything even from white lane. In the end Deane did win, but the race was a classic. The Red Bull Mega-G lead throughout, with first Julian and then Dave applying mighty pressure. Their scrap for second probably left Deane just the breathing space he needed to win by just 2/10ths of a lap, with Dave a mere 5 hundredths of a lap ahead of Julian! Tony trailed home    behind all this but again fired in fastest lap of the race by way of warning shot for the future.
The C final was almost as good a race, Robin Cornwall having to find the right balance of speed and caution to keep back John Chell and win by just .35 laps. The B final kept up this amazing run, the whole field covered by less than two laps, with Andy Player just about beating John Ovens as the latter took sizable chunks out of his lead in a no holds barred attempt to win. Would the cat and mouse racing continue on into the A final? The
line-up was Martin as hot favourite, Clive Harland in Blue having secured his promotion to premier grade by making the final, Tony Stacey as  the
underdog and Andy following his step-up.

In the end Martin crushed them all, with Andy taking a surprise second after taking a clever approach to the race, waiting for others to over-do it.
Clive took third on his Prem grade debut, with Tony last but very happy to make the final and beat 15 other hard charging drivers. Lunch was trimmed to 30 minutes following this final, the two rooms layout at Edmo again making it slower than idea assembling each race, with 4 drivers choosing Pro for the first time, 7 Nascars and the rest in Modified.

Martin was untouchable in Pro, but with three others in that class he knew that the pressure was on nonetheless. Any off track excursion with these
cars is always likely to be a biggie, so his approach was to run all four heats at the absolute limit so as to be in that mindset come the final, and
then build a big enough lead that a crash would not wreak the gameplan. It all worked out perfectly, but everyone was taking big risks at some point, the big, 1-3 lap losing, de-slot just waiting to pounce. Toward the end, Robin had a sniff at third and snuck past Clive with Marc Townsend the closest to giving Mart real pressure, finishing runner up. Despite winning by a big margin Martin's relief at the finish was palpable, as he knows how easy it is to throw it away. For those spectating, these cars continue to be the prefect way to finish the day, especially if you are not marshalling!

Nascar saw Andy continue to have a stonking day, beating Roy despite the Leighton Buzzard resident producing some quick lap times and scores, a 6.18s in red particularly standing out, on the way to class pole. Steve Stacey took a superb third, beating round one winner Deane who was in damage control mode after a torrid set of heats and yet more mechanical woe. Tony M was sixth, but yet again the lap times suggest more is to come so as those three battle away he could be in there making things difficult. Daniel was 5th, with John M 7th but showing flashes of real pace.

With four Pro-Mods entered for the first time, Modified ran as a separate class. Dave Rouse was the star here, although John Ovens, Julian and Tony S all produced the goods at some point during the heats. Qualifying behind Dave had been incredibly close, but it was Julian who took the fight to him in the end, beating John O narrowly in the B final and then being less than half a lap behind in the big one as Dave stuttered. Tony Stacey was third, but produced fastest lap to show what might have been. David stuck with his un-sorted short Mega-G in this class, but I suspect he will have headed off after a fun day plotting what to do next.

I believe EAHORC is in the best state ever right now, huge camaraderie as the video for this month shows, but some very intense racing and it is so
competitive in all classes. Who finds the most race-craft to go with their speed keeps shifting with every meeting and you never now how it is going to shake out, all you can do is bring your A game to every race and to every heat - and hope that is enough. DW

2010 Round 1 SCHORC yelling- 24/1/10

Back to Yelling for the commencement of the short 2010 season. With the snow threatening the event earlier in the month it was a relief to see it fade away and 15 racers able to get to the village without problems. Tony Baldock came along with dad Peter to compete in his first EAHORC meeting since January 2007, and with friend Ian Grinham also in tow and making his first appearance since 2003! The racing kicked off with F1, with Martin Hill not suffering his usual wobbles (they were to come later) to qualify on pole in part thanks to an untouchable score in what was to become the popular white lane. Tony was, as expected, up the sharp end with his Tyco, with Marc Townsend at last unlocking speed from his Mega-G to make the A final.

They were joined by local Paul Homewood, who led the vast majority of a very intense B final which required him to soak up pressure from all the other three as they battled hard. The E final had seen son Craig take the step up to the D, which was won by Dave Rouse but with Craig pushing him all the way and beating Julian Allard and Tony Stacey. These two finished 1/100th of a lap apart. The C final was won by Roy, the hero from last month struggling to match those heights, but now driving sweetly in the finals to beat Peter, Dave and Clive Harland and have a real shout in the B final.

This race was a classic, all four drivers in with a serious chance of making the A final at some point. Just when Paul thought he could relax as one rival crashed, another would pop up 2-3 seconds behind him. Late on Roy was showing the most pace and moved up to 3rd and then 2nd in rapid succession, and got the gap to the leader under 2 seconds before a crash dropped him back. Ian now found himself in second, and only a third of a lap behind, but Paul held on a drove with much aplomb as he had throughout and to make his first A final. After that the A itself was a bit of an anti-climax with the field spread out by half distance. Martin duly took a win with his Mega-G with Tony B second, Marc third and Paul a still stunning 4th considering the quality of the field.

For the afternoon, Marc and Clive duly entered Pro-Mod as expected and quickly got to grips with their new Slottechs. The pace of these cars now they are on lexan bodies is such they a crash is likely to be big and result in the loss of a lap, possibly two, so the stakes are very high. Martin produced fastest laps in all four lanes, but it was Clive pumping in the big scores as he wisely held a little in reserve compared to Martin and Marc. John Chell had also entered Pro, but was having a torrid time with his body clip and never figured. Clive took pole by five laps, with Martin behind Marc by a whopping eight, but still getting white lane for the final. Deane Walpole had found some form, using Martin's Nascar to take pole in a fierce battle with Tony B, and Dave had proved to be the fastest of the three Mod racers.

Finals commenced with Mod, Dave finding himself first under pressure from Tony S and then unexpectedly from Julian who had been having a torrid time in the heats with motor clip problems but came good when it mattered. In the end Dave won by 0.8 of a lap, with Julian just under two ahead of Tony. Nascar next and Peter initially looked the most likely to take the step up until an off saw his body clip scupper his chances, leaving Roy to again come on strong in the finals but not before having to see off a charging Ian, who had improved his score in yellow by 2 laps but could not quite get by. The A final saw everyone except Roy get off to a terrible start, but he then made what has now become uncharacteristic mistakes to squander the advantage and fall behind Deane and Tony as they headed into a private battle of their own.

Tony initially held sway, but Deane was closing in and encouraging race control to call the gaps. An off from the multiple champion just as Deane had got to within a few inches back saw the lead change hands, and trouble with his clip would see Tony eventually finishes last. Deane therefore took his first A final win since, with Andy second but not much ahead of Roy. The day wrapped with the Pro final, Martin on a mission to put his heat woes behind him and leading from the off. as the clock wound down, one mistake would have been fatal to his chances, so the race was tense as all three pushed to the maximum. Martin came through with an amazing 42.92 laps, with Clive second on 41.33 and Marc fast but trying too hard on 38.41 but well ahead of a still struggling John. A set of good finals, with the F1 B being the best and the highlight Paul's resulting 4th place. Well done to him and to all who attended for making it a great day.

Cotswold Challenge January Round

Round 1 of the 2010 Cotswold Challenge took place at Dowty's on Friday 22nd January with all the regular suspects in attendance, Rocky & Neal from Swindon being joined by Karl, whilst the Dowty contingent were swelled by no less than 11 juniors. We must be doing something right!!

A recently flooded clubhouse followed by computer problems did not bode well & red lane decided not to play most of the evening restricting us to best two out of three runs to count.

Neal top qualified from reigning champion Dave Coward, ahead of Rob Harris, Funky, Rocky & Roger Townsend, followed by the first of the Dowty juniors Tom Williams. The problems & delays meant that by the time qualifying had finished, many of the juniors were heading home to bed (something many of the adults were contemplating). This meant that the lower places were decided on qualifying so Connor, Kieran, Evan, Len, Dec & Jal took 13th to 18th places respectively.Martyn took 12th behind Karl from Swindon, whilst Tom Williams & Dean were 9th & 10th, Tom being unable to repeat his regular improvement on his qualifying position. Dowty's Roger Townsend had called it quits after qualifying preferring the thought of a warm bed!!! & finished 8th. Adam was the top finisher amongst the juniors proving that when you concentrate your driving improves, whilst Mike Wall took 6th with a car purchased from Funky prior to qualifying. Funky was 5th just behind Rocky, with DC reversing qualifying by taking the win ahead of Neal & Rob Harris.

All in all a character building evening, with S32 in 48 hours time!!  (Dave and Andy fixed the problem on Saturday, so we are OK for Sunday's meeting!! Chris)

See you on Tuesday 23rd February for Round 2 at Swindon's Dowty track!!
