Traveling arrangements for under 18s

This is an area which is rarely an issue in Slot Car Racing, but the following guidelines may be helpful if you are approached on the subject.

The responsibility for a child travelling in a car with an adult other than its own parent or guardian remains a matter for the child’s parents or guardian to make an informed decision about.  It does not fall under the responsibility of the Club.  Of course, sensible precautions should be taken – it is in the interests of both parties that they are accompanied by another responsible person where possible, whether adult or older child for instance, and no such journey should be undertaken without the consent of the parent or guardian.  The BSCRA does not need a rule for this – it is common sense and reflects on the responsibility of parents, and our civil responsibility as well.

Where the situation would change is that if the journey was undertaken by a Club minibus with a ‘club approved’ driver, then the responsibility for the safety of the individuals therein would lie with the club, who would need to be able to demonstrate that it had addressed such points as the appropriateness of the selected driver, their driving skills and experience, insurance cover for the vehicle, and even the maintenance schedule for the vehicle.  Under such circumstances (which I would imagine are very much the exception rather than the rule for most UK slot car clubs) it would be a sensible precaution for the CPO (or other CRB-checked person) to take the lead on this and at least be present on the minibus if not the driver.
