Blue King World Record

The World record for the fastest lap of a slot car track depends on a standard track design. Since the 1960s one of the most common Commercial 8 lane track designs used in top level racing was the American Model Raceways / AMF Blue King - a standard layout with 155 ft (47.24m) lap length.  American Model Raceways was sold to AMF who have long since pulled out of the track building market, but there was still demand for the standard Blue King layout.  More recently Blue Kings have been built by Hasse Nilsson, Steve Ogilvie, Gary Gerding, Mike Swiss and many other builders.  The 155 ft lap length and basic layout has remained unchanged.  Blue kings have always had a main straight leading on to a steeply banked  bend, but originally the other bends were fairly near flat. On some more recently built tracks, some of  the other bends are more banked, so cornering speeds have been increased, and the record lap times have been set on these faster tracks.  Here's some photos of modern Blue Kings from Gary Gerding's web site.  Inevitable the records are set by the fastest circuit racing slot cars - wing cars.

The records first went under 1.5 seconds in 2005, here's the records since then

(The average speed is worked out to 1/100 mph, but where the lap is timed to 1/1000 of a sec the speed isn't really accurate to 1/100 of a mph)
